UCI Medical Center is the youngest of
the five University of California hospitals and the only academic
medical center serving the residents
of Orange County and the surrounding areas. It has gained prominence
as one of the top medical facilities in Southern California not
only for its specialized patient care but also for the caliber
of its physicians and researchers. The Medical Center encompasses
two inpatient hospitals, general acute and psychiatric, a Magnetic
Resonance Imaging Center containing some of the most advanced
technology available for the noninvasive diagnosis of illness,
a Medical Library and Education Building, Pavilion I, Pavilion
II, Pavilion III, the UCI Chao Comprehensive Clinical Cancer
Center, administrative offices and numerous clinics. UCI offers
a wide range of prestigious academic; research and patient care
programs at these facilities.
The medical faculty of the College
of Medicine, together with the medical resident physician staff,
provides the professional
care
at UCI Medical Center. UCI physicians have expertise in more than
300 specialties and are dedicated to providing comprehensive diagnostic
and treatment services to more than 100,000 patients each year.
A
major capital improvement program is underway at UCI Medical Center.
It includes the construction of new intensive care units
for certain specialty patients and improvements in the lobby, pathology
laboratories and general medical floors. A new 92-bed psychiatric
hospital now replaces the previous psychiatric facility. The three
UCI Medical Pavilions are companioning facilities to the UCI Medical
Plaza on the Irvine campus all house multi-specialty care facilities.
The UCI Chao Comprehensive Clinical Cancer Center, a 56,000 square
foot facility providing comprehensive outpatient cancer care, opened
its doors in 1992 and became a National Cancer Institute-designated
cancer center as of August 1, 1994, the only NCI-designate in Orange
County. The Chao Comprehensive Clinical Cancer Center encompasses
all of the basic and clinical subspecialties involved in adult
and pediatric oncology, including specialized medical, nursing
and ancillary care necessary for diagnosis and management of patients
with cancer. A three-room outpatient-operating suite occupies the
third floor.
