Dr.
Hoang's CV
Clinical
Specialty:
Musculoskeletal Oncology
Clinical Interests:
Dr. Hoang is a tenure-track faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UC Irvine.
He is currently the Director of the UC Irvine Multidisciplinary
Sarcoma Center and his interests include surgical management of
bone and soft tissue tumors and general orthopedics. In this capacity,
he may serve as a consultant to other physicians in the care of
pediatric and adult musculoskeletal oncology patients. He is a diplomat
of the National Board of Medical Examiners and is Board Certified
by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Research Interests:
Dr. Hoang is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons, American Association for Cancer Research, Orthopedic Research
Society, Connective Tissue Oncology Society, Children’s Oncology
Group, Southwest Oncology Group, Western Orthopedic Association,
and California Orthopedic Association.
He has presented his research at many local, national, and international
meetings on a variety of topics ranging from complex joint reconstruction
to bone and soft tissue tumors. Of note, he was recently invited
to give a lecture on bone and soft tissue sarcomas at the National
Institutes of Health. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications
and book chapters, including reviews on soft tissue sarcomas for
the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and bone sarcoma for
Orthopedic Clinics of North America.
During medical school, Dr. Hoang was selected as a Howard Hughes
Medical Institute Research Scholar and spent two years conducting
growth factor research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda,
Maryland. Subsequently, he received his Orthopaedic Surgery training
from Case Western Reserve University under Dr. Victor Goldberg,
a leader in the field of osteoarthritis and total joint replacement.
During fellowship, he conducted genetic research in osteosarcoma,
a common bone cancer in children, at the Pediatric Sarcoma Laboratory
of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Due to his contributions, Dr. Hoang later received the Clinical
Research Award from the Department of Surgery at MSKCC and the Young
Investigator Award from the Children’s Oncology Group. His
laboratory at UC Irvine recently received funding from the National
Institutes of Health to investigate new ways to stop the growth
of bone sarcomas.
As part of his North American Traveling Fellowship, Dr. Hoang has
been invited to give lectures on musculoskeleletal oncology at many
prestigious institutions, among which are Harvard Medical School,
Thomas Jefferson University, John Hopkins, Darmouth, University
of Rochester, and McGill University in Canada. He was recently invited
as a guest editor to organize a sarcoma symposium by the journal
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research.
