Clinical Specialty:
Surgery of the hand, wrist, and elbow

Clinical Interests:
Dr. Gregory Rafijah specializes in the medical and surgical care of the hand, wrist and elbow. Dr. Rafijah takes a special interest in traumatic injuries of the upper extremity, distal radius fractures, elbow instability and stiffness, and thumb arthritis.

Research Interests:
Dr. Rafijah actively engages in research that involves the Distal Radius fractures, nerve regeneration, biomechanics of the elbow, and in thumb arthritis.



Background:
Dr. Rafijah received his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from University of California, Irvine and his medical doctorate degree from The Chicago Medical School where he graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. He later went onto an Orthopedic Internship and Residency at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. He followed that by a Hand surgery fellowship for the University of Washington. Dr. Rafijah served as Chief of Hand Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for 10 years, and formally had an appointment in the UCLA School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Rafijah currently serves as Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Nitin Bhatia and Dr. Thay Lee were presented with the prestigious "Harold and Nancy Willingham Award for Outstanding Research Paper" at the meeting of the Western Orthopaedic Association this year. Drs. Bhatia and Lee presented their paper, entitled "Biomechanical Evaluation of Short-Segment Posterior Instrumentation with Crosslinks In An Unstable Human Burst Fracture Model".

The WOA, with more than 1,700 members, held it's 73rd annual meeting in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Bhatia, an orthopaedic surgeon and Dr. Lee, a Ph.D Research Career Scientist/Biomedical Engineer, are on staff at University of California at Irvine.
